Man has devised elaborate means of overcoming any obstacle, man made or otherwise, that lay between himself and his satisfying his appetites by indulging in whatever activities wet them. Be they lawful or not. Reckless? Oh yes. Because all barriers are erected to protect us from whatever dangers lay beyond in their crossing. In Mansfordshire this barrier is known as "The Divide", a series of inter connecting back alleyways that literally divides the city into two halves: The posh upper class westend and the lower class eastend. And one of the dangers it protects us from is eastend crime boss Connor Nichols aka The Gripper.
Connor Nichols is the anointed crowded king of crime in Mansfordshire and the self proclaimed "most low of the lowdown". His "business associations" extend as far as into the far east and the Americas and his criminal enterprises reach deep into both ends of Mansfordshire and into all classes of society both upper and lower. Metering out select powders and potions of far eastern origin in varying levels of quality to every shop keeper, tailor, shoemaker, barrister, and posh with an urge to lift the weight of his burden and is lot with a moments indulgence.
But even the powerful can reach beyond their grasp. And a chance business "arrangement" with the sinister Mr. Qwist on Dr. Abbeline's behalf ensnares Nichols in the spider web of intrigue surrounding the Mangler murders by chance. But opportunity in business, particularly the business of larceny, is where you find it. And like all good businessmen, Nichols sees the Mangler murders as an opportunity to make money. Blood money.
