ACCESSORIES: JEFFREY TIFFEN SMYTHE

We all know the kind of toys a 21st century secret agent like James Bond gets to play with. But what accessories come with the job for a 19th century agent in her majesty's service like Smythe? And with no airplanes, automobiles, computers, lasers, or much of any technology to speak of in the 19th century, you look for the things you have readily available to the time period and (in this case) the person. And in Smythe that meant his ever present cane and bowler hat.

In 1888, on what would become the very first mission utilizing Continental Operatives sanctioned by the division of British Military Intelligence known as The A.T.S.T.K, Smythe suffered a near crippling knee injury while on a search and destroy mission along with Fiona and a fellow Continental Operative (and Fiona's paramour at the time) Templeton Revelle for what amounted to 19th century weapons of mass destruction. The injury left Smythe with a slight limp and a "keen interest" in the medicine laudanum. His rehabilitation required the use of canes to aid his walking. A year later, Smythe's continued use of canes to walk is more a matter of habit then necessity. And is in no small way a major part of his ability to function as an agent in her majesty's service.

Smythe owns a small arsenal of canes (all designed by the A.T.S.T.K's resident genius scientist, chemist, machinist, and technology developer the mysterious and singular named "Trubshaw") each containing a varying array of gadgets, weapons, and attachments ideal for any occasion, situation, or adventure. The Hawk's head cane (which Smythe uses most often and in casual situations) is equipped with a sword, grappling hook, and cable (both put to good use in this first adventure); the Wolf's head cane is equipped with a spear gun and poison dart gun; the asian themed Dragon's head cane (influenced by Smythe's years spent in the far east) is equipped with a Bo staff that breaks down into a 3-section staff, and there are ninja throwing stars in the handle; and lastly the western themed Horse head cane is equipped with a winchester rifle and a derringer in the handle.

Inspired by the Bond villain "Odd Jobs", Smythe's bowler hat is not just stylish, but is also a deadly weapon. When activated several small curved blades capable of cutting surfaces as hard as stone extend from the brim of the hat. The hat itself is aerodynamically designed with boomerang like properties that cause it to return to it's point of origin when thrown and it's deadly blades have done their business. In all, as Fiona mentions, giving new meaning to the phrase "sharp dressed man".

Next we delve into Fiona's toy chest and look at the tools she applies to the trade. Toys much more conventional then Smythe's, to be sure–But no less deadly
