Here we have a little about Hitomi's inner thoughts, this may give you a clue of why she is acting like that.

Of course, there's deeper feelings in each character (including Hayate, Kira and the rest of the vamps)that makes them living in a gloomy world.

I wish I could tell you all the background of the story but that will ruin the experience so, as things are moving on I will give you little explanations just to make you understanding better all this mess XD
