I'll be away on a field trip for 4 days, so you know what that means…

Anyway, as the battle gets heated, I think some explanation is needed.
The shielding spell used by Benriel to protect his companions previously absorbs or averts all but the most powerful attacks by transferring the shock to the caster's mind. This is an instantaneous but desperate spell to use.
Menelag isn't like the real world's 'seated on a huge chair' sort of official. The war minister of the elves is easily one of the best fighters around, and he's really, really fast.
Ana'leen is Benriel's wife.
