It's funny. I mentally know what to do to make foreground figures and stuff standout vs the background, to not bleed in, but the I get going, kinda forget, and viola, everybody has chameleon powers!! Once done, I feel like any attempt to fix it will just make it worse!!

(edit: Falopiancrusader sent me a paint-over with examples of where to apply light and shadow to create more standouts. I dodged/burned the page a little, attempting his guidelines, and while I need tremendous work in the area, it look so much better, imo Thanks FC!!!)

Notice that Rhiaan seems rather one-tracked minded?! I recall being young once!!
