Heat-treating is a process that is used to deepen the colors of some stones. Of course an oven is a much better and controllable way of doing it. Humor aside, I doubt forest fires alter the color of many stones as they're usually below ground. Heat-treating is also something that sellers are supposed to inform buyers about.
