What you can do is, In MS paint, use the Spraycan and use the two shades of red on top of each other a few times, then save as a JPG file, then open it up on something like Paint.net and use the magic wand tool and extract the shades of red which has now blended in due to it being saved in a JPG. And then you can put the blood into a different layer from a character and change the Opacity down to what you think is good, make sure the Blending mode is in Darken for a very nice blood effect in paint.net. ^^

You can download stuff like Paint.NET or GIMP to help you. They are both free.
Of course, practice never hurts. ^^
