I was asked the question–what is steampunk. Here's an answer for you guys!

Steampunk is a sub-genre of historical fiction/fantasy/science fiction generally set in a Victorian era where technology had been advanced during the period of steam engines. So you get a lot of technology like we'd have now, except steam-powered. Airships are a staple of the genre. Often it takes a fantasty twist by using aether stones/magic crystals/whathaveye to power things as well.

It's essentially a 'what if', asking the question of what if technology advanced much sooner than it did, following the fashion trends of that time period. Think–Victorian era, but with more airships.
