@ruff1298: Yeah….. Chuck has some problems, and as we have seen, they start at home.

@madisonchance: They really are. It's hard to see that when you're their target, but it's absolutely true.

@JinxMinx: Perhaps both are true? ;')

@meeplover: =) I have to say, this is something I've thought about a lot. For an 'outsider', just navigating the world can be an act of courage. Something bullies generally don't have to face.

@SoniaCBU: It's good that Sarah has him, isn't it?

@Cactus Wren:You're absolutely right, one hundred percent. I tell the story from Sarah's POV most certainly, but everyone in the story has their own reason for reacting as they do, and it's never as easy as just being "'cause they're mean". Your take on Chuck is exactly right. Mom, too, has her reasons.

@Synesthesia: Well, thanks! I do my best. =)

I think that's some really awesome advice to give.

You know, we've been thinking about this – because the strip has, properly, shown everything – from Sarah's point of view. For her, it's about no longer having to pretend to be Seth; no longer having to pretend to be a boy.

But from Chuck's point of view, it's different: "My buddy Seth, that I've known since kindergarten or earlier, now wants me to call him Sarah. He says he's a girl. He wants to do and claim and own all the girl stuff – girl clothes, girl toys, girl games, girl activities – that I've thought of as different, as other, as LESSER. Everybody knows that girls are less than boys, that girl-stuff is less real than boy-stuff. Now Seth is claiming that he's some different, other, LESSER version of Seth – some GIRL-version. Why would he want to do that? And what if that girliness, differentness, otherness, lesserness, *gets on me*? (Ew. Can you get girl-cooties from touching someone you always thought was a boy?)"

Or he's being like any other little boy and showing how much he likes her by being mean.

Bullies are cowards, even when they're as young as Chuck. Speak truth to power, Dad!

Dad's right about Chuck being Emotionally Maladjusted and unable to face the fact that the "weirdo" is more stable than him.
