In This Time of Threshing, ie, I’m Trying to Keep Geopolitics Out of My Comic But Geopolitics Won’t Keep My Comic Out of It.
Unfortunately, it seems to be the kind that blows away the grain and leaves the chaff, but there’s absolutely zip that you or I can do about that. Anyhow, speaking of grain, you may have noticed that a couple major wheat exporters are a little tied up at the moment.
Yemen is facing, welp, basically starvation for a significant number of her citizens. I don’t mean being real hungry, I mean as a cause of death, and the current war in Ukraine has made that a lot worse, as you might expect, with Ukraine going from a wheat-producing provider of humanitarian aid to a country in need of it.
And, uh, I admit that spending fifteen years in mental if not physical proximity to a country has the same effect as proximity to a person, you get attached and you don’t even realize it until something happens. And attachment isn’t logical and proportionate or even reasonable and neither is the weird stupid unexpected grief that comes along with it and smacks you in the face and leads you to sulk rather than drawing a comic set in the country in question. For example.
Things are tough all over, we’re all feeling the pinch from grain prices and oil prices and inflation, and I bet some of you (law of averages) were having a rough time financially already, and if all your cash is going to making rent and keeping the kids fed, I’ve got nothing but respect for you.
Any reader suggestions for other good organizations to donate to, especially location-specific ones, since my lovely readers come from all over the world?
