There it is, the explanation of Dook's name!

…which possibly nobody was asking for, but was one of the first things we ever wrote for the comic. See, we'd already figured out Chessie's name, but didn't have a name for our ferret character. Since Chessie is short for Chestnut, a name that's easily associated with a squirrel, I wanted a name that would work like that for a ferret. So I thought of all the ferret-related words I could, and realized that Dook sounds like Doug. So his name became Douglas.
