The thing you must understand about Tom is that he wasn't really intended to be a major character. I wasn't aware that one of the guardsmen would decide to shove into my story. At this point, he's only alive for dropping information and because I realized Jacob needed a crutch. Yep, that's Tom's original role… The human crutch.
