I didn't want to make a comic of him doing the deus ex machina cause it would be boring, BUT I think you need to know what he did.
So it is: They are no longer aware they're actors, but they are aware they're in a comic strip; obviously there is no script. He set time back, and inserted a new 8-bit author(the original was in Life as an 8-bit).
So yeah. Total deus ex machina.
… or should I be using first person?
