Has anyone here eaten penguin? I just happened to be in an electronics store the other day, and saw penguins on one of the display TVs, and the first thought that jumped into my head was, I wonder if penguins taste good? But then, I guess anything tastes good if you deep fry it.

That was random. Also, I recently purchased the new Star Wars movie on DVD. No, I'm not a Star Wars fan. In fact, as a sci-fi comic person, I'm rather ashamed to admit that I've only seen one Star Wars movie in its entirety and that's the first one. I've seen little scraps of Empire Strikes Back, and it looks like a great movie. I've also seen portions of the first and last of the prequels and they look like garbage. But because I am doing a space opera comic, I felt like I'd be shirking my duties as an artist or something if I didn't see the latest Star Wars. Oh, how I suffer for my art! So I bought the DVD, and that was several days ago… and I still haven't worked up the nerve to actually watch it. But it'll happen, eventually. I may even post a movie review afterwards, unless I'm just totally “meh” about it.

Ooh, and speaking of space opera, here's something really cool. Apparently some German guy named Dirk Loechel has painstakingly put together a size comparison chart of (almost) every spacecraft from most major sci-fi TV shows, movies, and video game franchises. It's pretty gnarly. There's some fairly obscure ones in there too; ships from Star Blazers, Star Fox, Captain Future… even Spaceballs and Futurama! Click the thumb below to view it on Deviant Art. Or, if you just don't want to leave this site, you can view the massive full size version by clicking here.

They didn't include the Death Star because it just wouldn't fit. But if you want to picture it, the Death Star is 120 kilometers in diameter. That's exactly five times the length of the 24 kilometer long Independence Day mothership (that ginormous saucer-looking thing in the lower left). That's almost the size of Saturn's bizarre tiny moon Hyperion.

The Star Trek ships are probably the most iconic sci-fi spacecraft of all time. You can find them in the upper righthand side of the poster, just look near that big yellow ball. To give you a sense of real-world scale, a large aircraft carrier is about 330 meters across. That's pretty close to the size of the Federation Olympic Class vessel (it's one of those little gnats on the very outer edge).

Better yet, Loechel even included the International Space Station. It's the very first ship, at the very top left outlined in a yellow box. At 100 meters across, it's the biggest thing we've ever put into space.

We've got a long way to go!
