091 - Salacia

A very unhappy cameo in one of those panels. Sneakily dated though… I think it's been two years since we've seen the little guy.

Erm… not an exciting page. Sorry, but I warned you. That's what you get during Lightning Week!

Lots of boring pages. And more to come. The next two pages are densely, densely… densely densely densely wordy and really could have used a LOT of editorializing. Also, some of it's arguably superfluous due to script changes, which I'll explain when the next update goes up. So that's what you're in for. The next two pages are a bit dull, but then things start getting interesting. I'm pretty happy with how this scene and the chapter comes together as a whole, but this is the rough patch we're coming up on.

Next week is the last week to cast your votes for the Drunk Duck Awards so if you haven't already voted, please do so! We need your votes! Hey, I know a good sci-fi comic that could use a vote or two, hint hint, just sayin'… Click on the link below to go to the voting page!

AUTHOR'S NOTES

In his early years, Isaac Asimov was fond of using real places for his science fiction stories: Alpha Centauri, Tau Ceti, and so on. But eventually he realized he was just setting himself up for trouble down the road, as eventually the onward march of scientific discovery would reveal his visions to be laughably inaccurate. So in his later works, he preferred to make up plausible-sounding fictional locations instead. He learned his lesson.

I, on the other hand, have not learned my lesson, since I'm still using actual real planets instead of made up ones. At first, I went with a made-up planet that I named Ixion… but then it turns out there actually is a planet Ixion in the Kuiper Belt, and it's not a very good fit for a number of nerdy reasons. So I dumped it. I replaced Ixion with a new made-up planet named Orpheus, and this time I checked first; we have no planets named Orpheus (though we do have an asteroid Orpheus, but who cares!). I had to dump Orpheus later for more nerdy reasons, but at the same time I was lucky enough to discover that planet Salacia's orbit works pretty well with the timeline for this comic, so I went ahead and used it.

Sorry, Dr. Asimov!*

More coming next week. I can tell you're excited.

*EDIT: Fixed reference to the late, great DOCTOR Isaac Asimov
