The first of several word-heavy pages. Those long-ish news blurbs were sort of rehashing events from earlier in the story. We'll quickly recap them here in a segment I call… Recap! (sorry, I'm not in a very creative mood right now)
RECAP
* The “Amphitheatre Attack” is in reference to the assassination attempt against Ozzy earlier in the chapter. You remember, the one exciting thing to actually happen in this entire chapter? Yeah, that.
* The two missing Intrasol agents report is a callback to Chapter 1, when we were first introduced to Rana as she rather casually dispensed with two secret agent types who chose the wrong villainess to mess with. The female agent – Demia Courau – was quickly dispatched and sliced into easily managed portions (which we now know were dumped into a waste processing plant). The man – Agent Six – was immobilized and carried off we can assume for further “interrogation” by Rana at a time of her convenience.
Agent Six, like Ozzy, was a casualty of the script rewrites, and I was planning on basically leaving him out of the rest of the comic. However, later on I decided I should un-delete him from the script and so he should be making a (re)appearance early in the next chapter, and as such I felt I needed to reintroduce him somehow before this chapter was over. That's why I felt the need to have a news blurb in the comic there – to sort of reintroduce the character, or at least hint at the idea that he may have some continued impact on the story.
NOTES
* The mooners are a separatist faction who have altered their bodies to better adapt to Triton's low gravity environment. Some extremist sects have a history of committing terrorist acts against regular "substrate" humans. They will factor into the story in the upcoming chapter.
* "Pokebox" is a virtual sexual liaison app, which first appeared – as a gag – on page 58, when Ozzy made a not-so-subtle overture toward Jetta.
* The remains of Demia Courau look like they're in an advanced state of decomposition, despite the fact that she's probably only been dead for like maybe twelve hours or so at most. That's because her body parts were dumped in some kind of chemical sludge meant to break down waste products into a reusable organic soup. If they hadn't discovered her within a day, there wouldn't have been anything left of her.
* The term Cro Magnon has of late fallen into disfavor among scientists, who now prefer the term European Early Modern Humans (EEMH). So it's unlikely the term Cro Magnon will have survived into the far future to be used by someone like Kai in regular conversation. I chose to use the term here because, despite its declining popularity among researchers, it's still the more recognized term among contemporary readers.
Most likely, someone like Kai wouldn't use the term “Cro Magnon,” but then most likely they wouldn't speak English as we recognize it today either, with all the common phrases and expressions and slang that we currently use. I'll make the occasional nod toward this in that background elements like signage and advertisements may be in a language other than English (usually German or French). There's no hidden meaning behind that; it's just me subtly acknowledging this comic's rampant anglophilia.
There should be two more updates to come this week, so stay tuned!
