Oy! I left out a few cells of the animation toward the end there and it really killed this one. I'll need to go back and re-render that portion in a few days when I have some time to fix it. It's amazing how much one shot can affect continuity.
This animation is a continuation of an ongoing series. You'll need to dig back a bit to catch the previous installs. If you're confused, that's okay; you should be. They're inside a space station that's filled with water, because the station is operated by mermaid people. Yeah. The marauding gang of purple-suited humans are wearing scuba gear because they can't breathe underwater, and they're being assisted by a treacherous mermaid turncoat. It's a fun challenge trying to tell a story with no words, but sometimes I'm not sure how effective I'm being, or if people are just looking at with glazed over eyes like "what the hell is going on here?!"
***UPDATE: The crappy original animation has now been replaced with a fixed, much betterer version. I usually don't bother re-doing animations, but this one was botched badly enough that I had no choice but to put it back under the knife! (10/11/2017)
With great power comes great irresponsibility. Rogue nanobots are a nightmare scenario for any security operation. When you're dealing with unregulated nanotech, assembled by miscreants with no regard for the lives of others and dubious technological know-how, you could very well have a grey goo catastrophe on your hands in no time. And that's game over. Evacuate the colony as best you can before they blast it to atoms. So Commander Ortega is in a real pickle here. If she zaps the infested area with a bot-killing surge pulse, she's more or less guaranteed to kill a lot of innocent people who haven't managed to evacuate yet. But if the bots spread and multiply, not only will she be personally responsible for losing a multi-trillion dollar colony, but the death count could easily be in the thousands.
As is probably obvious, the "surge pulse" weapon is some sort of sci-fi bastard stepchild of the electromagnetic pulse (EMP). They generate it differently, and have more control over the area if affects, but it causes damage through a similar mechanism: It causes a massive power surge in electronic components. It's the "nuclear option" when you're being overrun by rampaging bots. Unfortunately, since most residents of the outer solar system rely heavily on cybernetic implants – including systems to augment and regulate brain function, as well as other organs – the collateral damage can be severe.
All for today. See you later, alligators. I mean ducks.
