231 - Blackouts

Episode 20 of our ongoing animated series Insertion Burn. You can find the full recap of the series up to this point here in the page 225 Author's Notes. This animation was rough to put together, and there are definitely parts I'm not happy with, but such is life when you're trying to get things done on a schedule. Okay, actually I don't have a schedule, so there is no excuse.

AUTHOR'S NOTES



* The "Fangs! Fangs!" line by Ula in the third panel is a reference to when the zombie bot attacked her back on page 176. The bot's acid-dripping fangs were the last thing she would have seen before it started drilling into her skull.

In my original vision for this scene, Ula's internal fight with the forces taking over her mind was going to be dramatized. It would be an hallucinogenic sequence not unlike Nascha's devastating spirit journey in the previous chapter, though in this case also interspersed with little memory shards bubbling to the surface to remind her (and us, the readers) why she feels the way she does about Sergei. It was a neat idea, but it also would have added three to five pages to the chapter and, given my tendency to go off chasing tangents, I decided it was better to give that one a pass. Though it would flesh out Ula as a character and add some gravity to the situation, it also doesn't ultimately affect anything, and would have killed the pacing of this sequence.
