Weekend Extra: Evolution of the Best Friend

This go around I decided to do Marcus since he is the of the co-star of the comic.

VERSION 1:
My first idea for the Best friend/ troublemaker was this long haired tattooed Asian man named Vang Ly. Originally, Vang was Patrick’s childhood friend and college roommate, who later helped Patrick out after his ex-fiancée (Rosalind) leaves him by getting him a job a McDougal’s and giving him a place to stay. Vang was going to talk with a lot of slang, and act kinda ghetto, which would lead Patrick to constantly remind Vang, he’s not a Black Thug from the ghetto, he’s a Vietnamese from the Suburbs. Unfortunately for Vang ‘The Best friend’ this version didn’t last more than this one pane. The reason being after the Crazy tattooed Asian lady from the beginning (and later on in the comic) was finalized, Vang was best suited to have dealing with her.

VERSION 2:
After Vang’s part was changed, Harvey was created to be the best friend/troublemaker roommate. His personality was going to be an intellectual schemer similar to Zack Morrison from Saved by the Bell or Ferris Bueller. I never got around to doing any pages with Harvey as the Asshole/womanizing best friend because Marcus was brought into that role. It dawned on me around that time, that Patrick could never live with Marcus, without killing him, so I kept Harvey as Patrick’s former college and current roommate. Harvey’s personality changed into the quiet straight man, except around Marcus. They don’t get along at all. In my mind Marcus and Harvey are like the Finch and Stiffler (from American Pie). Harvey sees Marcus as a trouble maker, and Marcus is a bit jealous of Harvey and Patrick’s friendship.

VERSION 3:
If you read last week’s Weekend Extra you know that Version 3 was originally suppose to be Patrick, but things changed. (See the Evolution of Patrick for answers). Once he became Marcus, he took on the personality; I originally had planned for Vang. Marcus is a big womanizer always looking for the next piece of ass. And he uses a lot of slang, and acts very ghetto, even though he’s from the suburbs.

Well that’s it for this Weekend’s Extra. I think I’ll do a ‘Deleted Scene’ next week and then start on the Evolution of the different women. .
