See? I told you that you would get mad at Atila on the next page. If you don't quite get it right now, there's a scene that clarifies later. The only point is that Atila knew that the compact was magic. And in case you didn't catch, it was the "something" she had when Gabriel was asking her for a good luck charm.
I want you to realize she feels guilty. That's why she didn't give it to him right away when he asked and why she is kind of being snappy right now. In the end, her self-justification was that she was helping Gabriel because he couldn't get to Hell without her assistance.
