074: We Come In Pieces

Hello once again, TEO fans! Let me just say this about the page: It's not my favorite, ink-wise. This is my first page that I've done using Bristol board (for those non-creators in the audience, it's a very thick piece of drawing paper– as thick as, say, a cereal box, only much much smoother– that absolutely everyone in the comic industry uses, except for me, apparently) and I'm clearly not used to the much thinner line that resulted from no ink bleeding into the paper whatsoever. I will just have to get some thicker pens, I suppose.

But still, you don't want to hear about this! You want to hear about how I was at the…

FIRST-EVER VIRGIN MUSIC FESTIVAL

…at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore this weekend! On two stages played a line-up of bands that pretty much accurately describes my CD collection right now: Wolfmother, The New Pornographers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Thievery Corporation, Gnarls Barkley, The Raconteurs, The Killers, and oh so many more. We (me and my friend Margaret, that is) also saw the Who from a great distance, but to be honest, their act just didn't seem fresh. The best band we saw there was the Flaming Lips– we were right up in the front row, and there was confetti guns and balloons and fog machines and dancing people in Santa Claus and alien costumes and sing-alongs with a nun hand-puppet and Wayne Coyne walking all over the crowd in a gigantic plastic bubble and OH. MAN. IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER. If the Flaming Lips ever come anywhere close to your town to do a concert, do not hesitate one single second in buying tickets, because they alone will provide a truly epic and enlightening experience the likes of which you will not see anywhere else. (Especially not with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were playing at the same time on the other stage. I mean, yeah, they're good, but do they have confetti guns? I seriously doubt it.) Overall: The U.S., I'm told, doesn't have very many good concert venues, but the general music scene in Maryland has increased tenfold with VirginFest. (Of course, there were no trash cans, walking around was a pain, and a plain pit beef sandwich– just beef on a bun– cost eight dollars, which at any other restaurant would get you a fully loaded sandwich PLUS fries, a beverage, vegetable of the day and whipped dessert. On the whole, though, I'd say the day was a net gain.)

In other news… DrunkDuck is a friggin' sellout! Click for more. As for myself, I do not believe that this is a totally good move, but it isn't a totally bad one, either. Regardless, if things do get out of hand, we may have to resort to… drastic measures... heh heh heh…

That's it for this week. I will be spending next weekend in the lovely state of Georgia looking at Savannah College of Art and Design (where you can get a degree in Sequential Arts! Really!), so there will be NO UPDATE next week. Maybe. Unless I change my mind. Check back here anyways.

Sincerely,

Ian Jay
