Just as a note, if you're wondering why he's having so much trouble walking now when he was pretty clearly walking on his own (albeit with a limp)the previous day, this is based on my own experiences. Cue flashback!
When I was in high school, I injured one of my knees pretty badly during practice for the track team. It was pretty nasty and bloody, but I cleaned it up and finished my workout and even walked home from school afterword just fine…the next day however - good lord! I could barely bend my knee! After working it out a bit, I could limp on it, but I had a hard time moving it for a long time after that.
This is sort of like an extreme version of that. It's not that he can't walk on it now, but it's very stiff and tender at the moment so it's very difficult.
Nobody questioned me on that one, but I decided to jump in with an explanation anyway just in case. People have called me out on other things I've experienced or researched before. I like to be ahead of things.

In a couple more pages, actual interesting things start happening again!
