Inidas - Japanese toilets are like little troughs in the ground that you squat over. When you flush them, the water kind of shoots into the trough and down the hole.
Western style Japanese toilets have like twenty buttons that all make the water do various things.
If you're in the northern hemisphere, it's the southern hemisphere which flushes "backwards." Japan is north.
