Uncle Doug came to be with the desire to just do a goofy type of story with a goofy type of character. To date I had only written straight fantasy or sci-fi. The first thing I did in the winter of 2006 is post an ad on Digital Webbing (http://www.digitalwebbing.com) looking for a like minded artist who also was interested in drawing something in the humor category. I was lucky to have Giancarlo Lima contact me as he's been awesome to work with and shoot ideas back and forth with.

The decision for the first story was to put a character in an outrageous situation or at least what we thought was outrageous. Everything else came to be for the need of the story. I find it ironic that the first time out the characters were built for the story. The way the process is going now is that the characters are very much the influence for the direction we're moving.

In no way, shape, or form am I comparing Uncle Doug to the Simpsons, but if you go back to the old Tracy Ullman Show where the Simpsons originally appeared and watch the Simpsons today you can see the vast difference of characterization. This is exactly what is happening with Doug from his first appearance in this very story compared to the webcomic that will be appearing September 1st, 2007.

For your enjoyment here is a link to all those old Simpson shorts mentioned above:
