The characters have been communicating over radios. The signals only go a short distance, and they don’t go through the stone walls, which is why Mindy and Max never heard Ivan and Natalia until now. If that sounds contrived, that’s because it is, but dedicating a comic to fiddling with radios sounded incredibly boring, so I elected to hand-wave it instead.
