I generally try to avoid having meta humor come from the characters because I feel it can undercut the drama of the story if the characters are aware of the nature of their story. Some comics nimbly dodge this trap, but I personally prefer to abstain entirely. Using meta humor in caption boxes avoids this pitfall and allows me another avenue to poke fun at tropes.
