None of the referenced works in the caption boxes are real, with the exception of Buckaroo Banzai. This 1984 film is unique in that it is effectively a cinematic universe movie before such a thing existed. The movie acts like it exists as part of a series of films, comics, etc. with all sorts of continuity nods and references to other adventures…but none of it ever actually existed. The movie is an odd duck, and a mid-tier 80s sci-fi adventure at best (in my subjective opinion), but it deserves special note for its possibly unintentional prescience regarding the future of filmmaking.

The last panel is a reference to a scene in the movie, which actually has an interesting backstory.
