Fun fact: Widespread nuclear testing before 1963 spread significant radioactive contamination into the atmosphere. Not enough to cause serious harm, but enough to skew certain kinds of scientific testing. When scientists needed radiation-free metal, they would salvage it from old shipwrecks, especially the sunken German fleet at Scapa Flow. The water kept the metal largely free of radiation. Nowadays, this sort of salvaging has become pretty much unnecessary due to atmospheric nuclear testing bans and improved instrumentation that can better filter out background radiation.
