I am neither a grandparent or a hipster, but I can explain that vinyl records spin at either 33 1/3 or 72 rotations per minute. Since Mindy and Max’s makeshift transmitter used a record turntable, that would define the frequency of signal pulses.

As a side note, I didn’t really get the semi-recent vinyl record craze until my grandfather played one of his old records for me. The sound really is much more crisp and clear than other formats, though the price dissuades me from investing.
