I've wanted to write a kidnapping story arc but was undecided for a long time how to "fit one in," so I just let things develop and fall into place. Instead of using one of the few kids in the story or coming up with some new minor characters, I realized that Caroline is an ideal target. She's around 14 years old and from a fairly well-off family. Plus, a stranger might not take Kaida into their confidence, but Alex is apt to run to her at any sign of trouble.

dueeast: I'm glad you got that warm, friendly vibe. They are very comfortable with each other. (And Kaida is less of a tough-skinned loner than she thinks she is.)

Peipei: Unfortunately, Alex isn't prone to exaggeration. He doesn't use the word "emergency" without a reason.
