Behind the Scenes: page 820, tricky angles

I feared drawing this page. I put it off for a long time. I had no idea how to manage the poses and the angles and the perspective. I also was concerned about dealing with the "nudity" and with the potential graphic violence/gore.

You can see my original draft called for Seiko to tear her shirt, but that simply wasn't realistic. Clothing only tears at seams and this is sleeveless. Besides, this is not a situation that calls for modesty or stinginess. I knew she'd have to remove it, and I screwed up the design (I wrote this script originally before I designed her camisole/undershirt), so she had no bra. :P So, I added the leather jacket to Conrad's attire, which also provided foreshadowing.

Usually I draw either thumbnails or a full-sized draft, but after I finished the small version, I didn't have the confidence to draw the final, so I drew a second draft. I knew I'd cover Kylie's face for most of it in one way or other. I wasn't so sure about how to handle Seiko's "strip show"

This page also required significant digital alterations to my final pencilwork, as you can see. JustNoPoint helped guide me through foreshortening and positioning. Other minor changes included slight alteration of balloon placement and fixing hands to look better.

I often throw out preliminary drafts after I rewrite them (so I don't get confused), so I was surprised to find all these in my folder.

This is a special updates week for UB, and we're having something every weekday! So if you missed yesterday's update, make sure you go back and have a look, and check in tomorrow too. ^_^ We will return to our exciting UB story on Sept. 14th.

Also, I am requesting volunteers for cameos/extras in upcoming chapters. Details here.
