Behind the Scenes: deleted scenes

The last few chapters involved so many rewrites and drafts that I lost count! I know I mentioned a couple of these in my author notes already, so when I found them in my yellow folder, I had to scan them and share.

The first little exchange was deleted for obvious reasons. How could Seiko's mom be brought up without it turning into a giant flashback or at least a discussion? It wouldn't happen. And it certainly isn't an appropriate diversion for this plotline. Besides, I haven't firmly locked into my own mind the relationship between Misaki and Conrad and am not prepared to make such a leap as a writer.

"Another Sunrise" is my most rewritten chapter EVER. The first two drafts were lost either in whole or in part. The scene with Fudo was much longer to begin with, as the man has a poetic side and rambles a lot. The first couple drafts did not contain the "Tim" scene, mostly because they were written before I created the altercation between Ronnie and Conrad. They also contain a scene where Raidon's "boss" is referred to as "Shadow" and he is not shown except as an anonymous figure. (The dialogue did not change for any of the drafts, except to include the Ronnie incident.) I think the rewrite for Tim's scene, in addition to being more concise, is also more "on the nose" for the emotions and points I wanted to convey. I did like some of the original lines, but overall, I prefer the finalized version.

As for the last "deleted scene," I didn't even remember writing that! I actually laughed when I found it among my notes – in the final draft! I dunno if I should have changed that one, but I must've had my reasons for doing so. (Since it was the final draft, I likely changed it to fit the panel layout and body language.)

I did have a couple other scenes planned in that chapter that never made it onto paper. Most notably a confrontation between Yuki and Tristan in regards to her motorcycle. Unfortunately, it didn't fit the mood and nature of the chapter, so I never included it in any script, and it remains only in my mental archives.
