I have been making detailed observations of forests. Drawing this was fun (so much more fun than urban settings). Coloring it was tedious. It required 10 shades of brown and 8 shades of "white."

This is supposed to be the same clearing as on page 992. Originally, this script drew more attention to this fact, but I decided to leave it subtle. This episode/arc is very closely tied to that one. It is basically a continuation of it. Despite the slow pacing and dramatic mood, it is one of my favorite story arcs so far – both to write and to draw. Writing this one had a similar feel. If you need a refresher on the relationship and themes we are dealing with, pop back to “Slaying the Beast” and give a quick look through that arc. (The setting was as intensely autumn as this one is winter. Lol.)
