Belle is my Dame.
There always has to be a Dame. Every hard-boiled detective comes
across one that you can just imagine the low-whistles of appreciation
between the lines of the text. I’m not talking about the filler ones
(because every story also has its fill of the lesser women, or the more
histrionic antagonists) but the one that makes the main dick take a
second look. More often than not a shamus might find a little bit of
solace in a Dame’s company, smoothing out his rough edges.
Of course, there are always a few challenges that arise because of
the main subversion of VD – our hardboiled detective is in fact a woman.
That presents a bit of a challenge in recasting the role of the Dame
because, face it, Dom ain’t going to march up to filling that role any
time soon.
But I have plans. Every Dick needs a Dame, and Belle takes the cake in my opinion.
