A tragic loss of a sister/fiance for the duo to grieve over. One turns to the rebelious hero out for revenge/justice, the other joins forces with his lover's killer as a cybernetic robot….

No, wait… That second one still doesn't make sense yet, does it? There must be more to this still than meets the eye.
