I'm sorry for José. But thats as far as his concert goes. This happened before with Gaddiel.

Okay, I will try to explain a bit. That "candy skull" is a representation of a soul about to be collected by an Ankou, in this case, José. But oh no! They're not supposed to have horns! Bad juju. Now, in this Universe a lesser demon (as Aja referred to them before) is nothing but a corrupted, evil, impure (etc) soul. As Mr. Skelly explained once (and nobody cared about him), the Deadwoods died once, but their souls turned demonic and got back into their own bodies granting "new life". 
You could say an Ankou is in a lesser rank than Grim Reapers (because Ankou's origin is human), and that's it's not super effective against demons. Much less devils (?).
