The inspiration for this strip is twofold. First is that I actually did overhear this joke on a bus in Erie, Pa. back in 1990, during the administration of the first President George Bush. I figured this would be my last chance to use it, at least until the George P. Bush finds himself at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. (God, I hope that turns out to be a joke)
The second is that back in 1988, in my college strip "Norm's Dorm", I had Norm run for President and one of the most frequent comments I got about those strips was people telling me they didn't get it when I "got political", which always baffled me because I felt that those strips were more silly than satirical; more in the "Bloom County" vein than "Doonesbury". Judge for yourself, my November 2 strip is a re-creation of the final strip in the sequence.
Merry Christmas!
