Out of all the hard phases of parenting (whether it is to a human or pet), potty training is the worst and not because kids don't get it. The real reason potty training is so hard is because the kid very much gets it and doesn't like it. To them, giving up being able to just go in their nappies and now be limited to a contraption known as "the potty" which above all else is limited to one single room in the house which is the bathroom is in their mind, giving up something they once had control over which where to "go" and when to "go". In other words, it's not that they have trouble adjusting. They simply don't want to. They need to learn that it's actually the other way around. Not needing a nappy and being able to simple use the bathroom is the real freedom, but… until they learn that, it's hard for both parties.
