I'll keep it short this time, with a quote from R.E. Howard's poetry:

"The ghost kings are marching; the midnight knows their tread,
From the distant, stealthy planets of the dim, unstable dead;
There are whisperings on the night-winds and the shuddering stars have fled."

The E.A. Poe influence is undeniable, I would say. Most pulp authors, it seemed, were highly literate folks. Ironic, since pulp writing is often written off as tripe without even being read.
