Basil Poleduris passed away last November. In college, one of my good friends (let's make up a name for him- we'll call him Darb) was a very accomplished musician and composer. He's currently a composer in residence for a university, so I respect his musical opinion.

Darb always maintained that Poleduris' score for Conan the Barbarian was the most perfect film score ever composed, and one of the best scores ever written, film-related or not. With my admittedly less discerning ear, I'd have to agree.

During college I studied abroad in Ireland. One day in a music store in Dublin I came across a CD for Conan the Barbarian. This was huge- The CD had never been released in America. (This was in the days before Amazon and the magical tubes allowed you to buy music from anywhere.) I bought that copy of the CD, and scoured the city, finding two more copies at various stores, and bought those. When I got back to the US, I gave one to Darb, one to another friend who liked Conan, and kept one for my own listening pleasure. Now, of course, this CD is could be purchased with the click of a button, but I still remember how excited I was to first get my hands on it.
