Jamie59 - He's had a long life for those days (most folks didn't get very old).

El Cid -  THEY never pay enough for this sort of thing.  Lucky, if you get fed and a dry place to sleep.

bravo1102 - Actually he can change sizes, which does come into the story in a bit.  The Maniac is normally about 12 feet tall.   This story takes place before most of the Bible, so the knight probably is referring to the ancient eqyptian or royal cubit.  Or some thing before that.
