This isn't exactly what I was going for… but I did some stuff I'm proud of here. First, the ship up top is the very first Lego Space ship ever sold. One which was part of my collection. The technique I used was to make 3 different colored versions and shoot them all from the exact same angle. then I layered them all (they line up automatically) and to get the aged effect, I erased bits of the "brand new" looking version to expose the dirty dingy variants below.

The next thing I did was looked at the new ships and picked one that had similar elements placed in similar areas, so that if I colored it the same as the LL-918, it would look like a newer model that was a descendant of the original.

for the story… a guy winning the lottery and buying a new spaceship isn't funny… unless it leads to his demise. I suppose I could have had the new ship break down too, but it was easier to put the corpse face on the minifigure than to pose him working on the newer ship.

I got the idea to use the LL-918 when I saw it in KDog's comic. It brought back memories, so I built it in LDD for this thread which lists LDD files of official sets at Eurobricks. (hi, guys from Eurobricks)

Since it took me so long to reverse engineer the build (I eventually had to get the instructions from peeron for the bottom) I do what I always do when I run out of time for a comic build… I find a way to work the one that wasted my time into the comic.

Edit:
My friend Phil (who did the concept art for eXtra Ordinary) said he didn't understand the original version of this when I showed it to him. after I told him what was going on, he suggested a couple changes, and you see them as this updated comic. I'd like to take credit for "millions of dollars later…" but that was his idea.
