What is this?
It's a challenge to and for makers of sprite comics. (edit: It's open to everybody now.)

What are the rules?
Create a sprite comic using either ripped or home made sprites, and without making any game references or using any |337, create an engaging and interesting story arc. Some suggestions would be a detective story, a "slice of life" comic strip, a love story, a gripping suspense… you get the idea. The arc should be a minimum of ten pages but can be as long as you want.

Why the hell should I?
Whoever does the best job when it's all said and done gets a signed copy of the very rare First Drunk Duck collection, signed by the likes of KC Green, Ronson, JTPokie and Black Kitty. (and possibly me.). also, there are thousands of fanboy sprite comics out there, yours isn't the only one. if you want to stand out in the crowd, you must do something different.

Why Do you care?
A lot of people… A LOT of people… have written off sprite comics as fanboy fodder that is useless filler at best. I happen to think you can tell a good story using just about anything. There used to be a good webcomic called "Plastic Ledgends" which was told using photos of the writer's legos used as props and characters. There was "Screwball Islands", a good "sprite" comic strip that utilized homemade sprite sheets not found in any video game. Also, various stick figure comics such as "No 4th Wall To Break".

When do I start and how long do I have?
Well, you can start right now. It will take a while for enough people to see this and for all participants to come up with engaging material fit for submission, so at the moment a due date will not be set… but plan on a month or so.

How do I enter?
Very simple, you announce your intentions to do so in this thread.

I'm leaning towards "open to everybody" since HPK wants in on it, but I'm suspecting his motives run along the lines of having KC Green's autograph more than any other reason.

Also, if I can track down the copyright holders for submissions that use ripped sprites, and they give us permission to use the images for free… (we might qualify anyway, for there are funky laws about parody being outside the realm of copyright infringement.) … I'm toying with the idea of putting the best selections in a book. But that would restrict people's page sizes and shapes…

can somebody research the copyright laws concerning parody? as in what qualifies and how much you can get away with?

Yes, i cited you in the examples, my goal is to get more spriters to strive past fanboy |337!!!!1111OMG… You also have a leg up because you already have original sprite sheets you could dust off to do a ten page Screwball Islands story.

Enef; take as long as you need, you have a month or so. Hopefully, if you make your own, you'll be encouraged to continue your non-fanboy sprite comic. Your home grown sprites are welcome.

KC Green and Ronson have both confirmed they will sign the books (One's for a simmilar manga contest.). Now I must work on confirming Black Kitty and Gigcast creator JTPokie, who were also in the book. If you're Inkmonkey fans, he lives by KC, so when I send the book to KC to sign, I'll try to get Ink to go sign it too.

Man, I'm spriting mine from scratch, I'm almost done the first sheet. After that though I'll be able to pump the pages out pretty decently quickly.

cyclical animation within a panel is fine, making the whole thing an mpeg or flash animation is not. It's nice to see so many participants.

You all have a lot of work ahead of you, as three or so of Marine's tetris comic entry pages made me laugh out loud. (A first for me with Marine's comics.) This, in my opinion, is the best work he's ever done.

By the way, I don't know if anyone saw it earlier, but I said I screwed up during registration and now I cant activate my account. Can someone delete "Lyon" from the user list so I can re-sign up? Or activate me? Something?

I've thought of doing a single page of my comic in sprites just for fun… I'd even create their own sprites from scratch. But what kept me from doing it is the fact that somebody just finding my comic might mistake it for just another sprite comic and never come back.

I still kind of want to make the sprites anyway. I love making sprites.

yes, of course you can make a cover, you don't even have to restrict it to ten pages, but no, you can't count the cover within the ten pages. Other people would cry foul.
