There's a 'to watch' list as well, but I'll leave that for later.
Mahoujin Guru Guru:
If you're into the cute, jokey little fantasy-adventure genre, then I would definately suggest Mahoujin Guru Guru. It's kinda a satire on the old console RPGs that were commonplace at the time(this is a rather old series) and as such, would appeal most to fans of such games. I would like to note that this series was aimed at younger children. However, that doesn't really make much of a difference, being that it's Japanese.
Also, it contains this:
Oh, boy. I'll scratch the surface of my list.
Rurouni Kenshin (martial arts, drama, comedy, eastern fantasy)
Cowboy Bebop(futuristic, action, sci-fi)
Samurai Champloo (martial arts, adventure, comedy)
Detective Conan / Case Closed (mystery, drama, comedy)
Mahojin Guru Guru (comedy, adventure)
Burst Angel (sci-fi, adventure, comedy, mecha)
Gunslinger Girl (adventure, drama, sci-fi)
Yu Yu Hakusho (shonen, action, fantasy, adventure, comedy)
Fullmetal Alchemist (fantasy, action, adventure)
Elfen Lied (action, comedy, drama, ecchi, horror, sci-fi)
Fate/Stay Night (action, adventure, paranormal, fantasy, drama)
Ninja Scroll (eastern fantasy, martial arts)
Utawarerumono (fantasy, adventure, romance, comedy, sci-fi)
Naruto (martial arts, adventure, comedy, eastern fantasy)
Rurouni Kenshin: one of my all-time favorites. I grew up on this show and it's had a great impression on me. It contains a lot of action (martial arts / swordplay) and some comedy
Cowboy Bebop: one of the most artistic and beautiful anime ever. The whole series is ingenious and every report I've heard about this anime has been beyond positive. The action and plot are amazing, the comedy is perfect, the characters are amiable, I would recommend this for anyone. The only thing that went wrong with this anime was that it ended. I wish it went on for ever and ever!Samurai Champloo: this anime had great fighting sequences, interesting character relationships, intriguing character backgrounds, and a flexible story. It had a lot of really fun moments and was a great show to watch. Not much negative to say about this anime, either.
Detective Conan / Case Closed: a never-ending series that is mentally stimulating and has never ceased to enthrall me. I love this anime so much. My only complaint with it is that it's so incredibly difficult to find on the internet.
Mahojin Guru Guru: I've only seen the first 15 episodes or so, but this anime is hilarious. The characters are likable, the story is fun, and the humor is amazing. This quickly became one of my favorites.
Burst Angel: I've heard quite a bit of negative things about this anime, but I enjoyed it. It's kind of a typical, girl/gun/kick-ass type of anime, but despite its somewhat stereotypical characters, I had fun watching this anime.
Gunslinger Girl: This show was incredible. Unfortunately, I only got to episode seven out of thirteen before they took it off of the internet, but what I saw had me incredibly impressed and I heartily intend to finish this anime. I was quickly drawn in and found myself loving this show.
Yu Yu Hakusho: A long series, but worth watching to the end. I began this when I was a wee lil' chillen and finished it only a couple of years ago. This is a very action-packed anime that deserves much acclaim. The characters are easy to fall in love with, the story becomes more and more interesting, and the action is a lot of fun. By the end of the series, I had grown so attached to the characters that I found myself bawling at the series' close. I still miss it so much. :(
Fullmetal Alchemist: an anime that gained much deserved recognition, FMA was incredibly fun as the characters developed and the story unfolded as a masterpiece. This anime can keep your mind moving and lead you to care about and follow the characters. Definately an awesome show.
Elfen Lied: NOT FOR PEOPLE UNDER THE AGE OF 18. Very violent with a lot of nudity. Nonetheless, a beautiful, deep anime. My brother and I actually watched it with our mother who adored this show. My mom's cool like that. She likes anime and watches people get ripped apart by a naked chick.
Fate/Stay Night: Though I only began this anime, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The action is a lot of fun and the characters are easy to like. The story seems intricate and there appears to be quite a bit of mystery for the viewers to solve. But I could be wrong, since I've just started on this anime. But I've found myself to be a Saber fanboy. >,>
Ninja Scroll: Another fun action anime, with clashing swords and luxating and dissevering flesh with monsters and powerful humans, this shonen is pretty enjoyable.
Utawarerumono: an anime that seemingly no one has ever heard of in America, yet it's beautiful and so much fun. In an intriguing fantasy, with interesting characters who are congenial and diverse, this anime is easy to enjoy. I still need to finish it, actually. But it's difficult to find on the internet! D:<
Naruto: <,< Um… I would actually recommend this anime. There is a reason why it is so popular, after all, and for years I believed the soul reasons were because the characters were fanboy/fangirl magnets and the story was about silly kids pretending to be "ninja." I dismissed this show as incredibly lame, greatly due to its amassed popularity, and ignored it as well as I could. Then, when I was bored enough, I tried watching the first three episodes. To my great surprise, I found that the show wasn't that bad, so I continued watching. As I watched more and more, I discovered that it was a genuinely good anime, and I decided to keep watching it. The characters were actually somewhat likable, some being really neat, and the action was excellent, the story wasn't bad, the animation was incredible (so was the artwork), and the show was really creative. Sooooooooo I have decided to continue watching this series and enjoy it.
And I ended up writing about a thousand times as much as I meant to. D:
Everything I'm going to recommend has already been said, but eh.
FLCL- Like 5 episodes of PURE UNADULTERATED AWESOME. Srsly, if this had gone on a bit longer it would be my favorite animu.
Paranoia Agent- Fuck if I know what was going on, but it was awesome. Solid evidence that everyone in japan's blood is 80% of LSD. Very dark, and some HIGHLY fucked up shit (Like when the girl's dad had the hidden webcam in her room to sell porn :D )
Elfen Lied- O MY GOD TITS AND BLOOD AND EXPLOSIONS FTW. Incredibly NSFW
Fullmetal Alchemist- This cyborg midget would KICK YOUR ASS. Especially if you called him a midget. Also, very dark and slightly emo/gothy.
Yu Yu Hakusho- Epicness on a stick. Also, more proof that japan's soil is comprised of various happy powders.
Cowboy Bebop- There is nothing not good about this anime. Period. Space flight + Fay's bewbs + Spike being the goddamn man = PURE WIN
Rurouni Kenshin- Epic/awesome/etc. Amazing action, and some of the characters get batshit insane abilities towards the end of the series.
Naruto- Yeah, yeah, I know. But it's actually pretty good if you'll stop trying to be superior long enough to give it a chance.
Also, if you want some epic lulz, try watching a fansubbed version of the movie Pom Poko. It's not hilarious because it was MEANT to be, because it's actually a SERIOUS BUSINESS dramafag thing, but just watch it and you'll see why there are so many raffs.
Since summer season has started, allow me to go through a few that I've watched. I'm only picking up three new animes this season because 1. Most of the shows from last season are still running this season 2. I'm flying off to Asia.
Sekirei
The story involves a worthless guy who failed his college entrance exams but one day has a beautiful and buxom girl suddenly fall out of the sky on top of him. The girl chooses him as her master, and they subsequently get involved in a battle royale with other fighters.
This anime is set to be heaven for those into their sieyuus and voice actors, we've got people from Code Geass, Macross Frontier, Minami-ke and even Kamina-sama himself set to play the roles of these characters.
The animation wasn't dreadfully bad, although it's nothing special. I'll keep watching this.
Slayers Revolution
After over 10 years off the small screen, Lina Inverse and company are back, with the same cast. This time, the story starts off with them getting involved with a case of stolen treasure and a new character/animal named Pocota.
Although the first episode itself was enjoyable and it did look rather 'nineties' like akin to its previous works, I feel a bit missed out and anxious since I haven't seen the Slayers before. But I'll still keep on watching.
Hidamari Sketch x365
Summer is also bringing the return of Hidamari Sketch, the slice-of-life series about four girls who are attending an art school together.
Oh, I <3 this anime already. Even though I haven't seen the first season, it doesn't matter since the episodes are shown in non-chronological order. SHAFT, the animation studio responsible for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Negima!? makes this anime sparkle with it's lovely animation. Plus it's slice-of-life so that's a bonus for me. However, it's a bit on the slow paced side, but it's really well done!
Card Captor Sakura
Some people may put this off as some girly froo froo stuff, but it's really interesting. After accidentally releasing some magical cards from a sealed book, Sakura has the task to get them all back before they wreck havoc on the world. The animation is gorgeous, the character relationships are so interesting, and the entire storyline is very well written.
Air Gear
Ikki is the regular delinquent who is actually more gifted than anyone realizes. He and his friends are Storm Riders… which is a really reeeeeaaaally extreme type of roller blading. The action is amazing and the characters are very unique. One character is psychotic when his eyepatch covers his left eye and sweet and innocent when it covers his right. He literally carves bloody scars across people's bodies by rollerblading over them. The entire series is just BAMF.
Black Cat
One word: AWESOME. This is an awesome action anime. Train Heartnet (alias Black Cat) used to be lucky #13 in a secret organization that some say control all the world's governments. However, he left and now works as a sweeper (aka bounty hunter) with his friends Sven who can see into the future for a bit and Eve who can transform any part of her body into anything she wishes. Also, Train has a crazy stalker who kills all of Train's loved ones so he can be closer to him. Awesome! :D
…I'll recommend more some other time :3
Favorites
~Samurai Champloo (Samurai Period/Martial Arts)- My absolute favorite anime, seen it dubbed and subbed. A 15 year old girl hires two feuding ronin to help her find a man who she only recognizes as smelling of sunflowers. This series is full of anachronistic hip-hop style, awesome fights, great humor, sexual content, violence not suitable for small children, plus a heaping helping of wit, cleverness and mild historical accuracy and it's done by the same people as Cowboy Bebop.
~Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Slice of Life)- Koyuki is your typical loser with nothing going for him, till he meets up with the badass guitarist Ryusuke and finds he has the voice of an angel, able to bring grown men to tears. From there on, he and the band, Beck have to struggle, scrap and beat their way to their big dream, to "Hit in America"!
~Air Gear (Shonen/Sports)- Ok, yeah. Pastel already recommended it, but I recommend it again. Illegal undeground motorized super-skating gang wars? It's fun for the whole family!
~Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics(Fantasy)- I used to watch this when I was a kid and I still love it. Grimm brothers told anime style. It's cute, used to be on Nickelodeon and it didn't try and dumb things down for me.
~Bobobo-bo-bobo- I'm still trying to process what I was watching when I was watching this, but it still rocked. It's an anime that does what it feels like when it feels like with no respect for comprehension. Think Fist of the North Star on LCD….and every other psychodelic drug available.
~Fullmetal Alchemist-(Action/Adventure)- It's sacrilicious! You'll hear the word brother spoken more times than you probably ever have on average. Full of action, monsters, conspiracy and bad-assery.
~Bubblegum Crisis/Bubblegum Crisis 2040(Scifi/Semi-Mecha)- Same basic premises. Sexy girls pilot sexy robot-suits to fight against renegade "Boomers" or industial robots given questionable semi-sentience to serve humanity. Of course in the sci-fi city of Megatokyo, robots inevitably get corrupted and go renegade so it's up to the Knight Sabers team of crime fighters and the AD Police to stop them. I love this stuff, scifi at it's best.
~Read or Die(Spy Fiction)- Yomiko Readman is young teacher who blows her life savings on books. She also works on the side as a secret agent for the "British Library". Her most valuable talent, besides the enormous mass of knowledge she gets from books, is her ability to psychically manipulate the shape and density of paper in and out of combat. I like this one. It's got a ton of class and style and a bit of history.
Also one movie:
~Howl's Moving Castle- My favorite book in the world turned into a Myazaki movie. It may not be for you if you're from the dumb-action movie set. It's relatively calm, though there are some explosions, demons and witchcraft all about it.
Watching
~Hayate the Combat Butler (Shoneny/Parody)- Hayate is possibly the unluckiest boy on the planet, having been sold to "nice people" aka Yakuza by his parents to pay off their "folowing their dreams" aka gambling debts. Through several ironic and insane twists of fate Hayate finds himself the butler of a socially withdrawn, super rich wannabe Manga-ka with an army of people out to claim her inheritance. Now he's gotta be more that just a butler, he's got to be a Combat Butler! C'mon. This is a really fun show. It sends up anime and manga and video games, is filled with references and is Gar enough for a Man, but Moe for a Woman.
~Ranma 1/2 (Martial Arts)- Stop me if you've heard this one, dad takes son on training mission the second he can fight to try and make him the ultimate macho martial artist, dad accidentally takes son to cursed training grounds, dad kicks son into cursed spring, son turns to instant daughter, just add hot water. This is the classic Martial Arts Anime, it's like a harem anime with a lot more beating the crap out of each other. Full of rivals, monsters, magic and curses. One of my favorites.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Giant Robot)- Well, not so much watching as just finished, but including it anyway. This is the most intense anime on the face of the earth. Don't waste time reading this! Just watch it! It will enpregnate an awesome bomb into your brain that will explode into action! WATCH IT!
Aside from that, I spent a week translating the first volume of Sekirei and got frustrated after four pages because it's harder to look up kanji than it is to look up katakana and hiragana. Aside from that, I'd recommend… Sekirei (BOTH), Tsukihime (MANGA), Zombie Loan (MANGA), FMA (BOTH), and anything else good I can think of. More will come to mind… I'm just really absent-minded right now. Oh, did I say Ikki Tousen? It had TITS AND FIGHTING. And there's a lot of fighting, so it's not just a boring titfest. I mean, tits in a series get boring when there's nothing to bring about a storyline, you know? You eventually get disinterested.

wut flcl?
lolidunno
ITS PROBABLY GHEY
The both of you are massive faggots.
FLCL was made by the people that brought you such great titles as Gurren Lagann, Evangeleon, Abenobashi, and countless others. In short, Gainax.
The story is about your average everyday kid. who just happens to have the ability to pull shit from light-years away, out of his forehead. Who is tracked down by some strange alien woman for reasons unknown. (Think Gurren Lagaan, minus robots, plus more random, plus aliens and you have it.)
Its only 6 EPs long, so get off your lazy asses and watch it.

Erm, okay then, I'll just unwatch it and then watch for the first time again. But seriously, it was a fun anime, except I'm still kind of confused about N.O., care to explain?
You should all watch Mushi-shi it's only 26 episodes and its totally worth it trust me. It's really beautiful too, way awesome.
Ookiku Furikabutte, if you like cute boys and you like baseball, watch this.
It will make you like baseball if you don't. Nothing better than a little anime baseball.
It's a real nail-bitter, cause after I finished the series it was hard to wash my hands.
And the animes I'm going to watch about Strawberry Panic, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (excited to watch that one) and Soul Eater. But who knows when I will be able to lol.
So hey yeah you guys, you totally missed me.
<3 Enjoy.
