When I first got this page back from Brent, the first awareness of what we were actually creating was beginning to sink in. We started the book back in 1999, and the American horror comics market was pretty dormant. Warren Ellis was beginning to mix things up with STRANGE KISS at Avatar, but there wasn't a lot of visceral horror books on the market. By the time we finished the book in 2003, a mini horror renaissance was under way thanks to books like 30 DAYS OF NIGHT by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, so I think we hit the market at the right time.

The page itself is intentionally obscured, allowing the reader to take what they want from it. The hard of heart can certainly discern some of the more violent activities occurring on panel if they look hard enough, while the more casual reader can obviously get the point of what is going on without dwelling too deeply on the details.

I'm a big fan of Brent's character designs for the demons, which have a wide breadth of range as we're introduced to more and more of them as the story unfolds. The demons genuinely look like they're enjoying their "jobs", which is key in conveying the extent of their depravity to you, the gentle reader.
