This symbol is a variation of the "tree of life", either interpreted as a tree whose roots stand firmly in the ground and whose branches reach upwards, or a man who is linked to the earth, the material world, by his feet, but reaches to the sky, the immaterial, or idealistic, world.
I came across this symbol when I read the "dictionary of symbols". The tree of life is one of the simpler and more popular symbols and can be attributed to several cultures… and it also hints at one of the main topics of this comic. It also appears prominently in "Shin Seiki Evangelion" and the comic "Promethea".
EDIT:
Midge: You're awarded yet another no-prize! Yup, this is one of the gravest continuity errors of this comic. That's one of the troubles with not chronologically doing these pages… You'll notice that within a few pages she'll have the bandage back… ;-)
