That lizard is called a 'slurper' for obvious reasons and on its home planet it's used much as hunting dogs were used on Earth. The planet in question has very little visible light, so most of the creatures have very large eyes. Polina wears a blind on Kephas because otherwise her delicate eyes would be hurt. Poor Polina!
