I meant to talk yesterday about a follow up to an old blog I posted - Cheating Death (it’s a mug’s game). I was out on the balcony and noticed a huge black wasp as it flew into a hole in the drainpipe that was heavily fortified with cobwebs. I remember thinking, “the cojones on this guy…”

So whilst the wasp was cutting through the webs, a little spider came out to investigate all the commotion. It sized up the wasp and thought better of it, choosing to scurry back inside. The wasp, however had taken the time to size up the spider and raced in after it. A brief tussle played out on the web strings outside the hole and the victor emerged. The spider was carried away by the wasp like bees carry pollen and as the wasp passed by it slowed right down and did a victory lap around my head.

I feigned celebration and encouraged his enthusiasm since I realised that I will now have to rely on him to step into the spider’s role of keeping my balcony bug free. He’ll have big shoes to fill (and many of them) and I don’t want to get involved in another insect protection racket, but we play the hand we are dealt. I’ll keep you posted…
