Chapter 1 Page 5

The first of these pages without narration… however, the narration's purpose was some sort of juxtaposition of interior and exterior perspective, and this motif is carried through this page as well.

And I guess you have all watched Jurassic Park, so I don't need to explain why that guy is sitting on the toilet with pants on. I was 12 when I saw Jurassic Park at the movies… that was the time when watching movies was still a visceral experience above all. Transformers brought that sort of experience back for me this summer, or maybe I'm just becoming immature again. Not that Inland Empire wasn't somewhat visceral too. Somewhat.

And coming Monday

EDIT:

Nepath: Thanks a lot! Life itself seems pretty strange to me… I just reflect that in my comics.
DAJB: Yay, another childhood reference… for me at least. Though unintended on my part. But there'll be some intended ones too… wait for them :-)
Midge: Well, I AM a big fan of Lynch's… but i don't think I can compare to him :-D As far as the toilet scene goes, it's stuck between her remark about the toilets being jurassic, which is just a pun… but cutting to the Jurassic Park scene it's taken literal… then I cut to the waitress who happens to be dressed up like the Jurassic Park T-Rex, and watch for the symmetry between panels 3 and 4. So the scene is stuck between a confusion of metaphors and literal meaning and a mixing of memory and perception (suggested by the symmetry). These are indicators for mental imagery. The answer to your question what this has to do with the scene would be: It's mental imagery generated by the context of the main scene, inside of the protagonist's mind. Does that answer your question? (I don't think Lynch has ever done a clearly and easily explainable cut like this BTW :-D)
Fitz: And now there's a cap commemorating that special moment we all hold so dearly. And YOU can be the one to own it! …thanks a lot, you're my kind of audience :-D
