I'm handling the title like a technical term here… could well be Freudian, so I won't translate it. I don't know if it's thrown around much in English-speaking countries. Go look it up if not ^^

DAJB: Heheh… well, honestly I don't think there's a perfectly well translation, and in these cases an argument over what should be the right translation tends to help me more than an unsatisfactory attempt. It's clear that "vicarious satisfaction" doesn't seem to be far from the point, and "Ersatz" is pretty much "substitution". What I found particularly enlightening about the linked article is their mentioning the fact that what's not meant is one person deriving satisfaction from another's doing something in his/her stead. What's associated with the German word is roughly the following: You get the urge to do sth but can't, so you do sth else entirely to gain satisfaction.
Unigirl: In German that must be something like Minoritätsladungsträgerdiffusionskoeffizientenmessapparatur. Just guessing though (I'm far from an engineer) ^__^
Unigirl (again): In German you can build your words to be as long as you like just by combining them… like Kühlschrankreparaturdienstleistungsgesellschaftspressevereinigungsredaktionssprecher, for instance.
